ChatGPT Ads Expand to Five More Countries
OpenAI turned on ChatGPT ads in the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea. Who sees them, whether answers stay neutral, and what brands should fix first.

ChatGPT advertising is no longer a United States experiment. On August 11, OpenAI switched ads on in the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea, six months after the first test launched in the US on February 9. More markets are expected before the end of the year.
Who sees an ad and who does not
Ads appear below the response, and only for people on the free tier or the low cost Go plan. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education accounts stay ad free. If your team works inside a paid company plan, nothing about your daily use changes.
When personalization is enabled, ad selection draws on three inputs: the conversation you are in, your previous chats, and how you have interacted with ads before. OpenAI states that ads do not alter the content of answers. In March the company reported internal figures showing no measurable damage to consumer trust metrics, low dismissal rates and improving relevance.
Those numbers are OpenAI's own. No independent audit has been published, so the trust claim currently rests on the company's word.
How much comfort should "answers don't change" provide?
The distinction is worth taking seriously. An ad sitting below an answer and an ad sitting inside one are entirely different products. In the second case, a ChatGPT product recommendation would stop being advice and become paid placement.
The problem is that nobody outside OpenAI can verify which of the two is happening. The path from prompt to answer is not externally observable, so there is no way today to independently confirm the boundary is holding. That is a promise under observation, not a settled fact.
The shift underneath the ad inventory
There is a quieter change worth more than the ad units themselves. When someone searches for an ERP consultant or a supplier, they increasingly get one synthesized answer instead of ten links. Appearing inside that answer is a different discipline from buying placement, and it depends entirely on what a model can find and trust about you.
The pattern we keep running into with clients is consistent: they ask ChatGPT about their own company, dislike the answer, and discover the cause on their own website. The information is thin, scattered across PDFs, or contradicts itself between pages.
Before the ad budget conversation is worth having, three things need to be true:
- Your services, pricing model and contact details are stated plainly on your site in text a machine can parse.
- Common customer questions are answered in full sentences on pages of their own, because models quote those blocks directly.
- Outdated or incorrect claims about your company have been corrected at the source, not just on your homepage.
Buying attention in a channel that describes you badly is an expensive way to scale a bad description. Fix the description first.
